Company overview

From March 2001 through March 2009, Bechtel SAIC Company was the prime management and operations contractor to the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Civilian Radioactive Waste Management.

Its mission was to:

  • continue the core scientific and technological studies of Yucca Mountain, Nevada, the site of nation’s proposed repository for spent nuclear fuel and high-level radioactive waste
  • design a repository that could safely isolate nuclear waste from people and the environment for hundreds of thousands of years
  • prepare an application to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission for a license to build the repository

During its tenure on the Yucca Mountain repository program, Bechtel SAIC’s major accomplishments included:

  • Developing and submitting the preliminary site suitability evaluation of Yucca Mountain in 2001
  • A coordinated site recommendation effort in 2002 that entailed publication of the official site recommendation documents and public meetings around the United States
  • Production of the Critical Decision-1 package in 2006 that recommended the transportation, aging, and disposal canister approach and a simpler, safer, cleaner design
  • Certification of the Licensing Support Network
  • An unprecedented six Voluntary Protection Program Star of Excellence awards for excellence in workplace safety
  • The successful delivery of an 8,000-page repository license application, submitted to the Nuclear Regulatory Commission ahead of schedule and subsequently docketed by that agency

BSC was a limited liability company co-owned by two parent companies, Bechtel National, Inc., and Science Applications International Corporation. Through payroll, leasing of space and equipment, and other business expenditures, BSC’s direct investment in the Southern Nevada economy amounted to approximately $200 million per year. In addition, the company made corporate donations to hundreds of civic and educational organizations throughout Nevada and Washington, D.C., and its employees contributed countless hours of volunteer time to the communities where its employees lived and worked.
